Real Madrid are having a good start to life under their new coach, Xabi Alonso, and have already made their way into the knock-out stages of the FIFA Club World Cup after finishing at the top of their group.
After a rather drab draw against Al-Hilal in their opening game of the competition, the Merengues have been improving with every passing game, and their performance in their last match against RB Salzburg was particularly encouraging.
Xabi Alonso again successful with the 3-5-2 formation
The Merengues played this game very well, and showed improving defensive stability, in addition to their good attacking display. One aspect that allowed for this improvement was Alonso going with the 3-5-2 formation for this game, a formation which helped him enjoy a lot of success with Bayer Leverkusen last season.
According to Mundo Deportivo, the Spanish tactician is now planning to continue with this tactical scheme for the upcoming game against Juventus in the Round of 16.
Real Madrid had several days between their game against Salzburg and the upcoming match against the Italian side, and Alonso took advantage of this break to train his team in this new formation.
However, to implement this scheme perfectly, the Merengue coach will have to count on players like Antonio Rudiger, who has only played around 80 minutes since his return from injury. Meanwhile, Raul Asencio will be available to play alongside him and Dean Huijsen in a three-man backline after having served his suspension.
Kylian Mbappe can return for this game
Another factor that will make this upcoming game against Juventus more interesting for Real Madrid would be the return of Kylian Mbappe. The Frenchman has been unable to play under Xabi Alonso so far because of illness, and his gastroenteritis has taken a significant toll on his health.
Thus, although he will be in the squad, it remains to be seen how much he will be able to play in this crucial game.
