After their forgettable 2024-25 season, in which they were unable to win any big trophy, Real Madrid have significantly strengthened their team in this summer transfer window.
The Merengues had already added two new players to reinforce their defence for the FIFA Club World Cup, i.e., Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dean Huijsen. Now, the Vikings have added another player, i.e., Alvaro Carreras, to strengthen the left-back position.
Real Madrid must sell one of their left-backs
With the Spanish fullback’s signing, Real Madrid now have three left-backs in their squad, and as Diario AS has noted, one of Fran Garcia or Ferland Mendy will have to leave the Spanish club this summer, even though neither of them wants to do so.
Having invested €50 million in Carreras and making him the second-most expensive defensive signing in the club’s history, he is going to be the starter at this position next season.
Mendy more likely to leave, but Garcia would bring in a greater income

As things stand, Mendy is the one who is more likely to leave. However, the fact that he is already 30 years old and has faced several physical problems in the last few years means he does not have a lot of demand in the market. Thus, even if an offer arrives, the Merengues will have to set their asking price quite low.
On the other hand, Garcia has had a very good CWC, and he is an asset that the Merengue club can cash in. He is currently valued at €18 million by Transfermarkt, but Los Blancos would not let him leave for less than €25 million, and they are even considering asking €30 million for him.
Both of these players have their contracts expiring in 2027, but these other factors can determine which of these two players Real Madrid will sell this summer to solve the issue of overbooking on the left-back position, even though neither of them wants to leave.
