Real Madrid keeping tabs on €80m Premier League defender who is reluctant to renew his contract

Date:

In contrast to the last few years, Real Madrid have had a very exciting summer transfer window so far, as they have brought several new players to their team after a forgettable 2024-25 season in which they were unable to win any big trophy.

The Merengues have focused mostly on reinforcing their backline, which was clearly the weakest area in their team last season. To mitigate the weaknesses in this area, they have brought the likes of Trent Alexander-Arnold, Dean Huijsen, and Alvaro Carreras.

They have also signed the Argentine wonderkid Franco Mastantuono, who will join his new team on August 15th, after turning 18 years of age.

However, it seems that Los Blancos want even more reinforcements for the defence, which is somewhat understandable, keeping in view the physical conditions of Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao, David Alaba, and Dani Carvajal. Similarly, Raul Asencio has also been raising a lot of doubts about his long-term presence with Real Madrid lately.

In such a context, Diario AS notes that the Merengues have still not forgotten about the French centre-back William Saliba. In fact, the UEFA Champions League quarter-final tie between Real Madrid and Arsenal has further driven their interest in the €80 million-rated Premier League star.

Another French defender also on Merengues’ radar

Los Blancos are also being linked with another star defender from the EPL, the Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate, whom the Whites are looking to sign after his contract expires in 2026. The 26-year-old defender himself is willing to let his contract expire to join the Merengues.

This is also the case with Saliba, as, despite Arsenal’s attempts, he does not want to renew his contract that is set to expire in 2027. For now, it remains to be seen how this story develops, and whether it’s William Saliba or Ibrahima Konate who ends up joining Real Madrid. Both of them coming to the team can also not be ruled out.
