For this summer transfer window, FC Barcelona had two clear high-priority objectives, i.e., the signings of a goalkeeper and a left winger. The Catalans were quick to achieve the first objective, as they landed the Espanyol goalie Joan Garcia by paying his release clause, and now are also close to achieving the second objective by landing the Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford on loan.
In addition to these positions, the fullback positions were other areas of the team that the Blaugranes were reported to be looking to strengthen some time ago. They were also linked with players like Jeremie Frimpong and Alejandro Grimaldo for this purpose, but not a lot of progress was made on these fronts.
Barcelona make a decision about Denzel Dumfries
In addition to these players, the Inter Milan fullback Denzel Dumfries has also been linked with Barcelona recently.
The Dutchman is one of the best fullbacks in European football currently, and his release clause of €25 million, which remains active till the end of this month, would naturally have made him a highly appealing target for the Blaugranes.
In fact, SPORT reports that there were some internal discussions to assess this operation, but Hansi Flick believes that the right-back position is well covered with Jules Kounde, Eric Garcia, and Hector Fort, and thus, Barcelona will not make a move for Dumfries unless they are able to make a big sale.
Looking for a big sale
Currently, the Catalans are fully focused on completing the registrations of Joan Garcia and Marcus Rashford. They might look for a sale from the defence or midfield, and only if such a sale takes place will they make a move for the fullback positions.
In addition to Barcelona, some Premier League clubs have also shown an interest in Denzel Dumfries. It remains to be seen how his future will pan out, but for now, Inter Milan are now calmer about the situation after previously having been afraid that the Blaugranes would try to take advantage of his low release clause.
