Real Madrid vs Manchester City: Match preview

Date:

Following their hard-fought win over Celta Vigo in La Liga, Real Madrid are set to return to action in the UEFA Champions League as they face the English side Manchester City in the first leg of the Round of 16 tie.

As has been the case for the last few games, the Merengues would once again be without several of their key players, and getting a result against Pep Guardiola’s side in these circumstances would simply be heroic for them.

Match details:

Date: Wednesday, 11th March 2026

Competition: UEFA Champions League

Round: Round of 16

Venue: Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

Match Overview:

Real Madrid were able to progress to this stage of the competition only after playing in the play-off round, in which they faced the Portuguese side Benfica, whom they defeated with a 3-1 scoreline on aggregate.

However, their upcoming opponents are going to be significantly more difficult, as Pep Guardiola leads one of the best sides in Europe. The Merengues are coming into this game with a record of 3 wins and 2 defeats in their last 5 games, and would have to work very hard to overcome tonight’s challenge.

Furthermore, they would have several key players missing, including Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Eder Militao, Rodrygo Goes, David Alaba, Dani Ceballos, and Alvaro Carreras, all of whom are out with injuries.

On the other hand, the Citizens are coming into this game in significantly better form, having won 4 of their last 5 games, and having drawn the 1 remaining, against Nottingham Forest. Although their injury list is not as long as that of Real Madrid, they will still be without the likes of Josko Gvardiol, Mateo Kovacic, and Max Alleyne for this game, while Rico Lewis and Nico O’Reilly are also doubts.

Still, as matches between Real Madrid and Manchester City in the last few years have shown, form rarely matters in such big games. Hopefully, the Merengues would be able to get a favourable result from this game, and continue their way towards another UCL title.
