Real Madrid face Juventus in the FIFA Club World Cup Round of 16, and manager Xabi Alonso could receive a significant boost as a key player is now expected to start against Juventus following an injury scare against Salzburg.
Antonio Rüdiger, sidelined since the Copa del Rey final, made his comeback in the second half against CF Pachuca. Following Raul Asencio’s red card in that match, Rüdiger started the next game in a three-man defense, a tactical setup Alonso was keen to implement.
The experiment paid off against Salzburg, where Real Madrid’s smooth, free-flowing football showcased their adaptability to Alonso’s tactics.
Another injury scare and return to training
Due to overexertion and cramps, the 32-year-old defender was substituted in the 67th minute against Salzburg, and there was a minor doubt regarding his inclusion for the knockout match against the Bianconeri.
However, according to AS, with more than 48 hours to go for this match, Rudiger was involved in the training session and now looks firmly on the verge of starting, with Dean Huijsen and Raul Asencio, who returns after serving his suspension against Salzburg.
Almost the full Real Madrid squad at Xabi’s disposal
Barring David Alaba, who suffered an injury yet again this week, Alonso will have the full squad at his disposal, with Kylian Mbappe returning from illness and Endrick joining the squad as well.
Antonio Rüdiger’s recovery would be a major boost for the Spanish manager, who will finally get to start his preferred formation with an exact profile of players that he requires.
A fully fit Rudiger alongside the rock-solid Spanish duo of Huijsen and Asencio, means Real Madrid might as well possess the most lethal defence in Europe. The experienced defender is expected to play a major role under Xabi as he could prove to be the leader at the back alongside Huijsen and Asencio, who are deemed to be the future of this club.
