22-year-old Barcelona player emerges as priority target for Atletico Madrid – Report

Date:

Atletico Madrid have set their sights on FC Barcelona’s talented midfielder Fermin Lopez as they look to bolster their squad for the 2025-26 season, according to a report from Fichajes.

The 22-year-old Spaniard has emerged as a priority target for the Colchoneros, who are planning a significant midfield reshape under manager Diego Simeone.

Fermin enjoyed a productive 2024-25 campaign with Barcelona, contributing 8 goals and 10 assists in 46 appearances under coach Hansi Flick. Despite his contributions, the young midfielder faces stiff competition for a starting spot in a crowded Barcelona midfield, which could open the door for a potential exit.

With his contract running until 2029 and a high release clause of €500 million, Barcelona are reportedly open to negotiating his departure to gain salary margin for new signings, including the likes of Joan Garcia and potentially Nico Williams.

However, Fermin is reportedly reluctant to leave FC Barcelona, where he rose through the youth ranks and aspires to succeed at Camp Nou. Recent reports indicate that the young star has already rejected lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League to stay in the Catalan capital.

Atletico Madrid Planning Ambitious Midfield Revamp

As per the report, Atletico’s interest in Fermin comes as part of their broader strategy to build a competitive squad for the upcoming season. While their primary focus remains securing Argentine defender Cuti Romero, the club is also planning to revamp their midfield.

Simeone envisions a dynamic quartet featuring Pablo Barrios, Johnny Cardoso, Alex Baena, and Fermin Lopez. To facilitate these changes, Atletico Madrid are also reportedly prepared to part ways with key players such as Rodrigo de Paul and Conor Gallagher.

Although Fermin is not a priority for sale at FC Barcelona, a substantial offer from Atletico could tempt the Blaugrana to cash in on the versatile midfielder. As the transfer window heats up, all eyes will be on whether the Mattress Makers can secure Fermin’s signature and integrate him into their ambitious project for the 2025-26 season.
